OLIVER TOWNSHIP, Pa. (EYT) – Punxsutawney-based State Police report a 33-year-old Jefferson County woman was life-flighted after colliding head on with a four-foot embankment in Oliver Township, Jefferson County.
Police say the accident occurred at approximately 8:35 a.m. on July 26 as Katherine J. Knapp, of Stump Creek, Pa., was traveling north on SR 36 in a 2008 Nissan Sentra.
According to police, Knapp allegedly traveled out of her lane, across the paved shoulder, and off the right side of the roadway. She continued off the roadway and onto the grass berm.
Tire tracks in the grass showed no indication that Knapp applied the breaks, according to police.
Knapp then continued at a right angle along the berm for approximately 439 feet before colliding head-on with a four-foot embankment.
According to police, impact with the embankment sent Knapp’s vehicle airborne for around 69 feet before the front end returned to the ground. Forward momentum caused her vehicle to continue forward for another 11 feet before coming to a final rest facing northwest.
Knapp sustained injuries of unknown severity and was life-flighted to Altoona Regional Medical Center.
Police were assisted at the scene by Jefferson County EMS, Oliver Township Volunteer Fire Department, LifeFlight, and Brosious.
