Punxsutawney Girls’ Fourth-Grade Hoops Team Has Successful Season

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (EYT) – The Punxsutawney fourth-grade girls’ basketball team recently wrapped up a very successful season that saw them go 43-5.

The season concluded a couple of weekends ago when the team swept through the Norwin Tournament concluding by winning the title with a 20-18 win over host Norwin.

“The success of this team was a credit to to their teamwork, trust in one another and hard work,” head coach Stephen Griebel said. “Despite going against taller opponents and teams with deeper benches these girls kept their poise and composure, especially at the end of games.”

The team wad comprised of five fourth graders, two third graders, a second grader and a first grader.

Against District 9 opponents, the squad finished 6-0, and it also went 7-1 in the Ebensburg Boys’ League sharing the co-championship with the Punxsutawney fourth-grade boys’ team, which also finished 7-1.

The team won all the fourth-grade tournaments it participated in winning the Indiana, Derry and Saltsburg Tournaments in addition to the North Tournament.

I’ts record against other fourth-grade teams was 38-3, and the team also played in two fifth-grade tournaments going 5-2 including having the best record in the Punxsutawney fifth-grade tournament.

Team members included Emily Wisnesky, Natalie Burkett, Samantha Griebel, Emily McMahan, Danielle Griebel, Briley Monroe, Emily Dobbins and Olivia Burkett. In addition to Steven Griebel, Brian Burkett coached as did Griebel’s two older daughters, Katelyn and Emily.
