Punxsutawney Memorial Library to Hold Summer Quest Program for Kids Birth to 18 Years Old

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (EYT) – Summer Quest 2019: A Universe of Stories will take place from June 17 to August 17 at the Punxsutawney Memorial Library.

The program is open to children birth to 18 years old and is a comprehensive program meant to help children continue the learning process over the summer months, according to Library Director Jessica Church.

“This is the program formerly known as the summer reading program,” Church said. “This is the second or third year that it has been known as Summer Quest.”

There are two ways for children to participate in the Summer Quest program. One os to attend weekly programs when they fit the child’s schedule and the second is to print off or pick-up an activity log which can be completed on the child’s own time. Prizes will be available upon the completion and return of the activity log(s), according to Church.

“The logs are available for people whose schedules aren’t conducive to always coming in for the program,” Church said. “Part of what is in the activity log is having children explore the community.”

Church said children can do both the in-library activities and the activity log and that children can complete as many “bonus” logs as they can by the August 17 deadline. The activity logs will be available online and at the library starting Monday, June 17.

The in-library activities will be broken up into age groups. A tentative schedule is available at the bottom of the story.

“The younger groups will work with stories and activities, outer space themes and other genres,” Church said. “The older (groups) we want to get them engaged with people in the community, learning what they do. Say it’s yoga, cooking, a craft with their hands, all sorts of different things to expose them to different ideas. We are excited to see where the thought is taken.”

Church said the goal of the program is to show that the library is more than just books.

“If (children) aren’t active, keeping their minds active, they go into what is called the summer slide and lose some of the skills they gained during the school year,” Church said. “They aren’t always up to speed when they come back to school. That is why we find this program is important.”
