Punxsutawney Walmart to Close Overnight

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (EYT) – Walmart shoppers in some areas will not be able to depend on 24-hour stores for much longer.

According to a Bloomberg report, Walmart’s latest effort to cut down on expenses includes cutting the overnight shift in about 300 stores across the country.

One of the stores being affected in our area is the Walmart store in Punxsutawney, which will be closed between 1:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. beginning on April 26.

The overnight shift that restocks the aisles is being eliminated in the stores in question, and the company says they are aiming to transition those employees to other hours. The stores affected by this change are primarily smaller stores with lower annual sales or customer traffic.

The retail giant is also expanding the use of a backroom conveyor system called a “Fast Unloader” that takes boxes of products from trucks and scans them to speed their delivery to the shelves. The new machine will reportedly be in 1,700 stores by the end of the year, up from 400 now.

A full list of stores that will be closing overnight is not publicly available, and calls to Walmart Media Relations were not immediately returned.
