Punxsy Pizza to Host Pizza & Prevention Fundraising Event for Local Fire Department

The first week of October is earmarked National Fire Prevention Week to raise awareness of ways to prevent fires & show appreciation for all firefighters who sacrifice their time and resources protecting our community.

Since 2002 “Pizza & Prevention” has been a major fundraising event for our local volunteer fire department.

This year has given the community a few considerations that we must tackle. The state of Pennsylvania is currently under Governor Wolf’s Second Renewal of COVID-19 Disaster Declaration.  Because of this, we have had to modify the way Pizza & Prevention is conducted.

The 2020 Pizza & Prevention event will entail our volunteer firemen selling coupon cards during the entire month of October.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a great effect on the restaurant industry; jobs and revenue have been lost. Some businesses have not been able to weather this pandemic. Those that have are facing many difficulties such as shortages in the food supply chain, staffing & considerable increase in food costs.

We also realize that many groups and organizations have not been able to conduct their usual fundraising events.

Scott Anthony, owner of Punxsy Pizza said, “We are dedicated to being a community-minded business, and feel that the Pizza & Prevention should continue for the 19th year.  We believe this will benefit our community and give due respect to our hometown heroes, the Punxsutawney Fire Department.  Family pizza night adds a sense of normalcy to the routine of our lives during this stressful pandemic.”

“To keep all of our volunteer firemen, staff, and customers safe, we have modified the way we will organize this event.  We will be promoting social distancing and indoor occupancy limits along with mask-wearing.  The event will not take place at Punxsy Pizza – instead, for 2020 the Punxsutawney Fire Department will be selling the Chief coupon cards for $9.11 at various outlets throughout the month of October – National Pizza Month.”

Punxsy Pizza will be donating 100% of the profits to the Fire Department.

Persons wishing to support our local fire departments by buying a Chief pepperoni pizza coupon card can do so at the following locations:

  • Saturday’s during October at Central Fire Department from 9am to 3pm.
  • Monday thru Friday from 8:30am -10am at Lindsey Fire Department Lindsey
  • Thursday thru Sunday from 11am to 8pm at Elk Run’s Flashover Club on N Findley St
  • Individuals will also be able to phone in orders by leaving a message at 814-938-7901
  • USPS will be an option for prepaid coupons
  • You may also buy a card from any local volunteer firemen
  • Forms of payment accepted:  Cash, check or most major credit cards

Coupon cards will not be sold at Punxsy Pizza.  As a restaurant operating under the pandemic mandates of PA.  We must avoid having large crowds or lines of people occupying our location.  Should overcrowding or an excess of coupon redemption occur, Punxsy Pizza will have to cut off the placement of orders for that day.

An integral part of this has always been the element of prevention.  Once again, Nationwide-The Kengersky Insurance Agency has stepped up to provide smoke detectors for those in need (one per household).  The Punxsutawney Fraternal Order of the Eagles has once again joined with us as a major sponsor of the event.

Scott Depp, Chief of the Central Fire Department, commented, “The Punxsutawney Fire Department cannot say thank you enough to Scott Anthony the owner of Punxsy Pizza for hosting Pizza and Prevention again.”

This year there has been a lot of changes in the Fire Service as well as for everyone with COVID-19.

We have had to come up with new procedures to protect our members and the public. Most of these changes involved us having to purchase new protective equipment and cleaning supplies, which was an added expense that we had not planned on.  That coupled with having to cancel many of our fundraisers, making it a very hard year for the fire service.

Depp added, “then comes along Punxsy Pizza “Scott Anthony”, wanting to help the Punxsutawney Fire Department and the community again.  The 19th year in a row in hosting Pizza and prevention to help protect our community.

“This event will bring much-needed funds to the Punxsutawney Fire Department, and help the community by providing safety with smoke detectors to those in need.  We want to thank Kengersky Nationwide Insurance Agency and the Punxsutawney Eagles #1231 for helping support this event.  We owe a deep debt of gratitude to Scott for sponsoring this event to help maintain our volunteer departments.  Please come out and support this great event for the Punxsutawney Fire Department.”
