Punxsy State Police Investigating Shooting Death in North Mahoning Twp.

police_line_11NORTH MAHONING TOWNSHIP, Pa. (EYT) – Punxsutawney-based State Police are conducting a death investigation involving an accidental shooting that occurred yesterday at a residence on Whitaker Road, in North Mahoning Township, Indiana County.

According to police, around 9:30 p.m. on August 6, a known, 21-year-old Smicksburg man was in his bedroom with three of his nephews – ages 11, 12, and 13.

The 13-year-old picked up a black powder pistol and was holding it when the victim grabbed the barrel of the gun and pulled it toward himself. This caused the weapon to accidentally discharge, striking the victim in the chest, police say.

The victim succumbed to his wound and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Indiana County Coroner, according to police.

There did not appear to be any intent or negligence, and the shooting was ruled accidental, police say.

An investigation is ongoing.
