Rabid Raccoon Found in Brookville

A Rabies Alert has been issued in Brookville, Jefferson County.

Location – Route 949, Brookville, Eldred Township, Jefferson County

Summary – A dog was outside barking at a raccoon that was lying near a stream in the middle of the day. Three teenagers went outside to get the dog away from the raccoon and placed an empty dog crate on the ground near the raccoon. The raccoon walked into the crate and the girls closed the door, capturing the raccoon. The Pennsylvania Game Commission killed the raccoon and submitted it to the Pennsylvania Veterinary Laboratory in Harrisburg, PA where it tested positive for rabies.

Exposure – One dog with a current rabies vaccine was exposed to this raccoon. No people were exposed to the raccoon.

Rabies Law – Pennsylvania law requires all dogs and non-feral cats three months of age and older to be vaccinated against rabies. Booster vaccinations must be administered periodically to maintain lifelong immunity. Failure to comply with the law may result in a fine of up to $300.
