Rachel S. Yount

Rachel S. Yount, 92, of Punxsutawney (formerly of Juneau), passed away quietly at her daughter’s home surrounded by her caring and loving family on Saturday, October 29, 2016.

Mrs. Yount was born on February 11, 1924 in Juneau, a daughter of the late George Wilson and Esther Caroline (Alabran) Shields. Rachel married her sweetheart, Marlin D. Yount on April 22, 1947. Mr. Yount served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and preceded Rachel in death on April 26, 1978.

Mrs. Yount was a member of the Valley Chapel United Methodist Church in Juneau. Rachel was the consummate homemaker who kept a wonderful home and took great pride in caring for her family. Her family was her life, and she was a very proud and nurturing mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who dearly loved fussing over her “grandchildren”. She especially beamed with joy over her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. When not busy with the rigors of homemaking, Rachel enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and working on puzzles. She was especially fond of reading. Known as “Grandma” by many, she was dearly loved and will be missed by her loving family and all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Mrs. Yount is survived by three daughters, Marla Rae Fullerton and husband Eric of Denton, TX, Bridget Marlene States and husband John of Punxsutawney, and Polli-Ann Hollenbaugh and husband Gary of Punxsutawney. Rachel is also survived by a sister-in-law, Nelda Shields of Gaston, IN; seven grandchildren, Michael and Matthew Fullerton, Dr. Phillip States of Punxsutawney, Jeremy States, Kambrea Pratt, Todd Hollenbaugh and Acacia Gressley; and nine great-grandchildren, Payton and Cassidy Fullerton, Alex, Hailey, Josh and Allison States, Tristan and Kairi Pratt, and Xzavier Gressley.

Mrs. Yount was preceded in death by her parents, George and Esther Shields; a brother George “Dick” R. Shields; and two sisters, Florence Nelson and Elizabeth Havrilla.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc. of Punxsutawney. In keeping with the wishes of Mrs. Yount and her family, funeral arrangements were private. Mrs. Yount was interred in the Mahoning Union Cemetery in Marchand. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mrs. Yount’s honor may be made to the “Autism Speaks” Advocacy Organization.
