BROCKWAY, Pa. (EYT) – The Brockway School Board hired Dana Rindosh as a new elementary school teacher in the district at its August meeting.

Rindosh’s hiring came after the resignation of Laura Starr over the summer. Starr had worked in the district for 11 years.
The board also hired Melissa Knox as a part-time cafeteria worker.
The board also welcomed new student representative Rylee Welsh. Welsh is a junior at Brockway. She joins senior member Anthony Glasl.
Two Board Members Receive PSBA Awards
Two members of the school board received awards from the Pennsylvania School Board Association (PSBA).
Edward Yahner and Robert Grecco were honored for outstanding dedication by PSBA Representative Erin Eckert. Yahner has been on the board for 20 years. Grecco has served for 12.
“They are very dedicated to our district,” Brockway Superintendent Jeff Vizza said. “We just appreciate their service and dedication to our district and children.”
Board Member Says Gives Update on Charter School Issue
Yahner read an update from the PSBA about Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf’s decision to look into charter schools and how they are run.
Yahner said Pennsylvania taxpayers have been paying $1.8 billion to run charter schools.
“Charter schools are a cause of property taxes going up,” Yahner said the PSBA said. “These students could be going to public schools.”
A math teacher attending the meeting divided the $1.8 billion by the number of school districts in Pennsylvania, which is 500. The total came to $3.6 million that could go back to those school districts.
Other Business
In other business the school board:
- Set the adult lunch prices at $2.70
- Updated agreements with Dickinson Center, New Story, and Riverview Intermediate Unit No. 6 for special education services for the upcoming school year.
- Agreed to work with Penn State University for placement of student teachers.
- Heard that no fuel bids came in. The district will look for a provider within the district boundaries.
- Approved updating Microsoft licenses for district computers. The annual cost will be $8,382.35. James Brown voted no.
- Exempted the property taxes of Mundurf United Methodist Church’s Social Hall.
Vizza thanked the custodial staff at the school district for getting the buildings ready for the upcoming school year.
The next board meeting is at 7:00 p.m. September 10.
