Robert J. Konior of Hastings, MSgt, USAF, Ret. died Tuesday, June 29, 2021.
He was born on November 30 1930, in the Scranton area, the son of John and Sophie (Kosick) Konior. On January 20, 1962, he married Marianne Hustosky at St. Vincent de Paul Church, Leisenring, PA.
He graduated high school in 1948, worked for Acme Food Markets, and joined the Air Force in May, 1951. He had basic training at Sampson Air Force Base, in the Finger Lakes Region of New York, and remained there as a technical instructor for basic recruits through the Korean War.
He retired after 25 years of active duty on August 1, 1976 to accept a position as JAFROTC instructor at Cambria Heights High School, Patton, where he taught until 1990. He earned his Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Alaska and his Masters from St. Francis University, Loretto. He was active in the Hastings VFW, Patton American Legion, Cambria Co. School Retirees, Hastings Public Library, and St. Bernard Church and School.
After his second retirement, he became active in the Sampson Air Force Base Veterans Association, helped to establish the Air Force side of the military museum at the Sampson State Park, volunteered each summer as a guide there, and attended annual reunions. He enjoyed bowling with the Industrial League in DuBois and golfing at Cambrian Hills in Northern Cambria.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother John Konior, a sister Rose Pedley, and a daughter-in-law Audrey Brothers-Konior. He is survived by his wife and six children, Joseph, Louis (Christine Ambrisco), Nicholas, Michael (Jessica Becker), Roberta (Brian Ganoe), and Mary (Donna Jackson). There are also six grandchildren: Jonathan Konior; Mackenzie (Kyle Dunkle); Bailey, Brooke, and Regan Ganoe; and Owen Bork, and one great-granddaughter Oaklynn Dunkle.
Visiting will take place Thursday, July 1, 2021 at the Easly-Hindman Funeral Home, 333 Beaver St., Hastings from 5 until 8 p.m. and Friday, July 2, 2021 from 10 until 11 a.m. prior to the Funeral Mass at St. Bernard’s Church at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Hastings VFW.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the building fund at the Hastings Public Library.
