Rodney Devere Boyer

Rodney Devere Boyer, 89, of Jimtown Road, Brookville PA went to be with his Lord and his wife on Monday, February 11, 2013 while being cared for at the Brookville Hospital.

He was born March 27, 1923 in Brookville and was the son of Shirl V. Boyer and Nellie Carrier Boyer and after Nellie’s passing early in his life, Leila Black Boyer became his loving Mother.

He was married June 2nd, 1947 to Phyllis Mae Westerman who preceded him in death in May, 2001.

He was a 1942 Graduate of Brookville High School and enlisted in the US Navy immediately after graduating.

Devere, as he was known by most, served on US LSM490 (the Amphibious Navy) in the South Pacific Theater thru the end of WWII, “visiting” such islands as Guam, Okinawa, and Eniewetok, surviving Kamikaze attacks and the great typhoon of 1945 along the way.

Upon discharge, he returned to the family farm and in 1959 he began employment with the US Post Office where he worked until retirement in 1983. During these years, he still farmed, raising beef cattle.

After retirement from the post office, he was a Real Estate Agent for Sarvey Real Estate for several years, and finally sold his beloved cattle after suffering from a stroke in 1999.

Devere and Phyllis were forever faithful to their Lord, and served as a Deacon at the Bethel Independent Church for many years.

He is survived by one Brother, Elmer I. Boyer (Shirley) of Sigel, PA and 5 Children: Melinda Black (Tom) of Portland Mills, PA, Ken Boyer of Jimtown, PA, Roger Boyer of Menlo Park, CA, Michele Nolan (Jerome) of Thurmont, MD, and Tammie Gaston of Frederick, MD, and 15 Grandchildren, 22 Great-Grandchildren, and 3 Great-Great-Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Shirl Boyer, Nellie Carrier Boyer, and Leila Black Boyer, his wife Phyllis, and infant daughter, and his son and daughter-in-law Thomas R. and Mildred S. Boyer, and one Great-Grandson Benjamin Straub.

Friends will be received at the McKinney Funeral Home in Brookville, PA from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM on Thursday, February 14, 2013 with the funeral services being held on Friday, February 15, 2013 at 1:00 PM at the funeral home with the Rev. Don Henderson officiating. Burial will take place in Riggs Cemetery, Warsaw Twp., Jefferson Co., Pa.

Full U.S. Navy Military Honors will be accorded to Mr. boyer at the time of services on Friday, February 15, 2013.
