Samuel Howard Rager

Samuel Howard Rager, 81, of Rossiter, passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2022, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born in Rossiter on February 9, 1941, a son of the late James Lloyd Rager and Elizabeth (White) Rager.

Mr. Rager was a United States Marine, serving his country for over twenty years. His service included the Vietnam War where he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and RVN Gallantry Cross. During his military career he taught Radar, which he continued to teach at State Tech in Memphis, Tennessee following his retirement.

On August 07, 1963, he married the former Anna Louise Johnston. She preceded him in death on November 6, 1994.

Sam enjoyed reading and taking care of stray animals. He had a kind heart for all of God’s creatures and kindly looked after them by feeding and caring for them if they came to his door.

Mr. Rager was a member of the Rossiter American Legion.

He is survived by two sons, Bradley Rager and wife Lisa of Bartlett, Tennessee, and Samuel Rager of Norwich, New York; one granddaughter, Samantha Coggins; one brother, Thomas Rager of Niagara Falls; one sister, Susan Huntsman and husband Richard of Niagara Falls.

Preceded in death by his wife and parents; four brothers, Alvin, James, George and Roy Rager.

Friends will be received from noon until 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, 2022, at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.

Interment will follow at Union Hill Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the Rossiter American Legion.
