Samuel Levy

Samuel Levy, 82, of Punxsutawney, died Friday, December 18, 2020, at McKinley Health Center in Brookville, PA.

He was born December 1, 1938, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Ben and Julia (Redding) Levy.

In October of 1961, he married Marcia (McMeans) Levy and had two sons, Benjamin Todd and Samuel Scott. He was a veteran of the US Army.

While his kids were younger, he could be seen as a reserved but astute spectator alongside his more demonstrative significant other at Sam and Ben’s baseball, basketball, and football games. He was a huge Steelers fan and could be found at the golf course on most summer Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings.

Sam’s professional life was consumed by his love and devotion to Jefferson Wholesale Grocery Company which he co-founded with his brother, John. He was a gifted accountant, spreadsheet analyst extraordinaire and knew the ins and outs of the grocery business at the highest level but he would wholeheartedly admit that the undeniable fundamental key to his success were the literally thousands of great employees he surrounded himself with through the years. The love was mutual as Sam was universally regarded as kind, fair, and generous to a fault. As his career was winding down, he was most proud of the thousands of jobs he created, the very good people he was able to help along the way and the fact that many of his former disciples went on to their own successful endeavors in all walks of life. He was also pleased to have been very active in countless philanthropic endeavors while always insisting that he not be publicly recognized.

Samuel was preceded in death by his wife, Marcia; sisters, Diane (Levy) Perry, and Ruth (Levy) Jacobson; and brother, John Levy.

He is survived by sons, Sam and Ben, and their respective better half’s Leslie Bozic and Georgetta Sheesley.

There will be no service as Sam and Ben are both quarantined, so no visitors please.

Interment will be in Circle Hill Cemetery, Punxsutawney.

Memorial donations can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
