Sex Offender Who Escaped During Work Release Waives Hearings

JEFFERSON CO., Pa. (EYT) – A sex offender who reportedly escaped during a work-release program waived his hearings in court recently.

Court documents indicate 35-year-old Michael Alan Brewer, of Erie, waived one second-degree felony count of failure to verify address or be photographed as required and one second-degree misdemeanor count of escape on November 3.

The charges have been transferred to the Jefferson County Court of Common Pleas.

Brewer remains lodged in the Jefferson County Jail on $60,000.00 monetary bail.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred in early September.

According to a criminal complaint, on September 10, Punxsutawney-based State Police responded to a business in Pine Creek Township for a report of an absconded work-release inmate from the Jefferson County Jail.

The complaint states Michael Alan Brewer reported to his approved work-release employer, but at 7:50 a.m., the shift supervisor noticed Brewer was absent and could not be located.

The complaint notes a Jefferson County Adult Probation Officer related that Brewer did not have any approved absences and was in violation of his work release conditions.

The second-degree count of escape was filed against Brewer through Magisterial District Judge Gregory M Bazylak’s office on September 10.

The complaint goes on to state that while conducting CLEAN/NCIC checks of Brewer, police also determined he was a current Megan’s Law offender requiring annual updates.

According to the complaint, during that time, numerous residences were checked, and an extensive canvass was conducted to locate Brewer with negative results, and as of September 15, Brewer had not been located and his address had not been updated as per his Megan’s Law registration requirements.

One second-degree felony count of failure to verify address or be photographed as required was then filed against Brewer through Magisterial District Judge Gregory M. Bazylak’s office on September 16.

Brewer was arraigned in front of Judge Bazylak on both charges at 11:20 a.m. on September 18.
