Six Pitt Wrestlers Headed to NCAA D-1 Nationals

PITTSBURGH – Six University of Pittsburgh wrestlers are making the trip to New York City to compete in the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Madison Square Garden.

The opening round is set for Thursday, March 17 at Noon and will conclude with the championship finals Saturday, March 19 at 8 p.m.

Three Panthers are returning to the national stage on Thursday. Redshirt senior Nick Bonaccorsi (197) is making his third trip while sophomore Dom Forys (133) and Ryan Solomon (285) make their second. Redshirt sophomore Cody Wiercioch (165) and true freshmen LJ Bentley (125) and TeShan Campbell (174) are appearing for the first time.


  • Pitt is sending at least six wrestlers to the NCAA Championships for the 18th time.
  • Bentley, Forys, Weircioch, Bonaccorsi and Solomon were all automatic qualifiers out of the ACC Championship. Campbell received an at-large bid on March 8.
  • Bonaccorsi is 5-4 at the NCAA Tournament. In his last trip in 2014, he was one win short of earning All-American status after finishing 3-2.
  • Forys and Solomon made their first appearances a year ago in St. Louis. Solomon finished 2-2, while Forys went 0-2.
  • Forys is the lone Panther to earn a seed at the national tournament. The Pittsburgh native earned the 11-seed at 133 pounds.


  • 125 – LJ Bentley will face the 10th-seeded Connor Schram of Stanford at 125 pounds. Bentley wrapped up the regular season 18-10 and recently finished fourth at the ACC Championship. A native of Cannonsburg, Pa., Schram is the 125 pound champion out of the Pac-12.
  • 133 – 11th-seeded Dom Forys will take on senior Dominick Malone of Northwestern at 133 pounds. Forys concluded the regular season 24-2 and 5-0 against ACC opponents. His competitor concluded the dual season 22-10 and finished 9th in the Big Ten Tournament.
  • 165 – Cody Wiercioch is set to face the No. 10 seed Austin Wilson of Nebraska. Wiercioch compiled a regular season record of 16-9 including a 3-2 mark in the ACC. He earned a fourth-place finish at the ACC Championship. Wilson recently finished fourth at the Big Ten Tournament.
  • 174 – TeShan Campbell will take on the No. 10 seed Michael Ottinger of Central Michigan at 174 pounds after receiving an at-large bid on March 8. The Pittsburgh native concluded the regular season 17-8 overall and went 10-5 in duals. Ottinger finished the regular season 27-5 and finished second at the MAC Championship.
  • 197 – Nick Bonaccorsi will face fifth-seeded and two-time ACC Champion Conner Hartmann of Duke at 197 pounds. Bonaccorsi and Hartmann have met five times throughout their careers, Hartmann has won all five.
  • 285 – Ryan Solomon is fresh off a third-place finish at ACCs, Solomon will face Collin Jensen of Nebraska. The Milton, Pa., native compiled a 14-7 record overall and finish 3-2 in ACC duals.


Nick Bonaccorsi is set to clash with Duke’s Conner Hartmann at 197 pounds in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. This will be the fifth meeting between the redshirt seniors.

The 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships are set for March 17-19 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The championships will mark the first NCAA final of any sport at The Garden since men’s basketball in 1950. This year’s championships will also mark the third time nationals have taken place in the state of New York. Only 330 wrestlers are making the trip to The Garden.


The Panthers are making their 35th straight appearance in the NCAA Championships – scoring team points in each of those seasons.


Pitt has had an All-American in four straight seasons, including three top-eight finishers in 2012,
2013 and 2015.
