Slow Moving Super Load Makes Its Way Through Region

Image 1ERIE CO., Pa. (EYT) – Motorists may experience delays as a large piece of equipment travels to Lock Haven from Erie. The super load began its journey on Thursday and is expected to arrive at its destination Friday, Dec. 13.

PennDOT is helping provide information on the movement of the super load. Thursday’s travels took it as far as Harborcreek Township in Erie County. It will leave on Friday from the former K-Mart location at Route 20 (Buffalo Road) and Nagle Road in Harborcreek Township.

The piece of equipment making the trip from the Port of Erie to First Quality Tissue in Lock Haven is a Yankee Dryer. That’s a piece of equipment used in the production of tissue paper. It removes excess moisture from pulp that’s being converted into paper.

PennDOT Press Officer Jill Harry says the entire transport, the Yankee Dryer and the truck used to transport it, measures 217 feet long, 20 feet wide and 20 feet high. It weighs 628,000 pounds. The truck will only be able to travel 5-15 miles per hour for the entire 300-mile trip.

The size of the transport may require signs and light poles to be temporarily removed as it travels through certain areas.

“Sometimes there will be temporary road closures at intersections and roadways,” she says. “You could say it has its own entourage. There are people moving the signs and the poles, there are also people who are directing traffic.”

The super load also has an escort from Pennsylvania State Police.

PennDOT has released a route map for the journey but it’s hard to say what the schedule will be as travel time depends on a number of factors including weather conditions.

Updates on the daily movement of the super load can be found at PennDOT.gov.
