Smicksburg Woman Victim of Scam

alertNORTH MAHONING TWP., Pa. (EYT) – According to Punxsutawney-based State Police, an incident of theft by deception occurred on Miller Road, in North Mahoning Township, Indiana County.

Around 12:45 p.m. on January 2, PSP Punxsutawney investigated a report of theft in which an unknown perpetrator sent a check to a Smicksburg woman in the amount of $1,750.00 for payment towards a snowboard that was put up for $350.00.

The victim cashed the check and returned the extra $1,400.00 to the perpetrator. The bank that the check was cashed through then contacted the victim and related that the account had insufficient funds, according to police.

The incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. on December 21.

This incident remains open pending further investigation. Attempts are being made to locate the perpetrator, police say.
