Sr. Catherine Anne Mesanko

Sister Catherine Anne Mesanko, RSM, died on Sunday, March 11, 2018, at the Sisters of Mercy Motherhouse. She was in her 65th year of religious life.

Born on April 15, 1934, in DeLancey, PA, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary (Pluchinsky) Mesanko.

On June 28, 1953, she entered the Sisters of Mercy at St. Joseph Convent, Titusville, PA, from Saint Adrian Parish in DeLancey. At her reception as a religious, she received the name Sister Mary Berchmans but later returned to her baptismal name. She professed perpetual vows on August 2, 1959. In 1981, she celebrated her Silver Jubilee; in 2003, her Golden Jubilee; and in 2013, her Diamond Jubilee.

She received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Mercyhurst College in 1965 and her master’s in general education from Edinboro University in 1985. She pursued additional studies at Villa Maria and Gannon Colleges in Erie, Saint John’s College in Cleveland; and LaRoche and Carlow Colleges in Pittsburgh.

Throughout her ministry, Sister Catherine Anne taught primary education in numerous schools of the Erie Catholic Diocese: St. Patrick in Franklin, SS. Cosmas and Damian in Punxsutawney, St. Walburga and St. Titus in Titusville, St. Thomas in Corry, and St. Michael in Greenville. She also served as assistant principal at St. Luke School, a receptionist at Mercy Center of Aging (Hilltop), and in her last ministry, treasured her work as sacristan of Christ the King Chapel at Mercyhurst College (University). She spent two summers ministering to children in the Head Start Program for Erie County. In 1973, the Teen-Age Action Club at St. Luke gave her an award for 20 years of dedicated service to youth.

Members of her religious community, and two sisters Dolores Poy of Stump Creek, Pa. and Mary Jane Holeva of Rossiter, Pa. and many nieces and nephews, survive her. In addition to her parents, her brother George preceded her in death.

Friends may call at the Sisters of Mercy Motherhouse, 444 East Grandview Blvd. on Thursday, March 15, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. that evening. Viewing at 2:00 p.m. will precede the funeral Mass on Friday, March 16, at 4:45 p.m. in the Sisters of Mercy Chapel. A rite of departure will take place at the Motherhouse at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 17, with the rite of committal following at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
