The number of crimes reported to Pennsylvania State Police decreased by almost 40,000 in 2013, about 4.2%.
The total number of crimes reported last year fell to about 880,000; down from 918,000 in 2012.
The report focuses on Crime Index offenses, which are considered to be both the most serious and most likely to be reported.
Crime Index offences include nuder and non negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson.
The breakdown of reported Crime Index offences for 2013 is as follows:
-Murders decreased by 13.5% to 611
-Forcible rapes increased 12.2% to 3,781
-Robberies declined 6.5% to 14,716
-Aggravated assaults decreased 7.6% to 23,646
-Burglaries decreased 9.1% to 51,860
-Larcenies/thefts fell 3.7% to 196,877
-Motor vehicle thefts declined 8% to 13,742
-Arsons decreased 3.4% to 1,684
