Northwest PA Superintendents Combine Voices at First Annual Summit

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Superintendents from Northwest Pennsylvania came together to share education concerns and propose solutions to some of their most pressing issues on May 8 at Grove City College.

The Summit included 75 superintendents from the service regions of Midwestern Intermediate Unit #4, Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit #5, Riverview Intermediate Unit #6, and Beaver Valley Intermediate Unit #27.

Acting Secretary of Education, Pedro Rivera, joined the group via videoconference. Matthew Stem, Deputy Secretary of the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education and Steve Latanishen, Legislative Specialist joined the group at Grove City College to listen to the solutions and concerns proposed.[/caption] This event was the first of its kind for northwest PA and was designed to provide regional superintendents with a forum to discuss current education challenges regarding unfunded state mandates, teacher effectiveness and the role of the PA Department of Education (PDE). The goal of the conference was to create solutions to be offered to legislators and PDE that will help to ease the burdens on school districts in our region.

Presenters included: Jim Buckheit, Executive Director of Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators (PASA); Joe Bard, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Association for Rural and Small Schools (PARSS); and Pedro Rivera, Pennsylvania Acting Secretary of Education. Also in attendance were PDE representatives Matthew Stem, Deputy Secretary of the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education and Steve Latanishen, Legislative Specialist.

The Summit, coordinated by Superintendents and staff from IUs 4, 5, 6, and 27, was well received by attendees and will be the first of ongoing regional efforts to join small and rural school districts.
