Teen Driver Killed, Passenger Seriously Injured in Two-Vehicle Crash on Route 422

PINE TWP., Pa. (EYT) – A 19-year-old woman was killed and her passenger seriously injured in a a two-vehicle crash on Thursday afternoon at the intersection of Routes 403 and 422 in Pine Township. 

According to Indiana-based State Police, the crash occurred around 2:53 p.m. on Thursday, August 18, at the intersection of U.S. Route 422 and U.S. Route 403, in Pine Township, Indiana County.

According to WPXI, Indiana County Coroner Jerry Overman Jr. identified the woman as 19-year-old Alicia Renae Chila, of Northern Cambria.

Police say Chila was traveling in the right lane, southbound on U.S. 403, while another vehicle, operated by a 75-year-old New Castle man, was traveling in the right lane, westbound on U.S. 422.

According to police, Chila failed to stop at the stop sign and blinking red light, and proceeded through the intersection, failing to yield to oncoming traffic on U.S. 422.

The oncoming vehicle braked and swerved to the left, but was unable to avoid striking Chila’s vehicle.

Chila was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her passenger, an 18-year-old North Cambria woman, was airlifted to UMPC Altoona with critical injuries.

The name of Chila’s passenger was not released.

It is unknown if the New Castle man was injured.

Pine Township Volunteer Fire Department, Cherryhill Township Volunteer Fire Department, and Citizens Ambulance Service assisted at the scene.

According to PennDOT, U.S. 422 was closed in both directions between the intersections of Harmony Road in Cherryhill Township and Historical Road in Pine Township, Indiana County “due to a crash involving a tractor-trailer.” The road reopened around 5:25 p.m.
