Three District 9 Teams Do Battle in PIAA Playoffs Tuesday

CLARION, Pa. (D9Sports) – Three District 9 basketball teams – two boys’ Class A teams and one girls’ Class AA team – will battle in the PIAA Playoffs second round Tuesday with two games at Clarion University’s Tippin Gym and one at IUP’s Memorial Fieldhouse.

The two boys’ teams in action are District 9 champion Elk County Catholic and D9 runner-up Coudersport, while the girls’ team playing is District 9 champion Karns City.

ECC and Coudersport will be part of a doubleheader with District 10’s Farrell and Kennedy Catholic at Tippin Gym, while Karns City plays the first game of a doubleheader at Memorial Fieldhouse.

Here is a quick look at all three games:

BOYS’ CLASS A SECOND ROUND

(9-2) COUDERSPORT (23-3) vs. (10-1) KENNEDY CATHOLIC (24-2)
Game Details: 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, at Clarion University’s Tippin Gym

Who the winner plays: Winner of the game between (7-1) Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic and (6-2) Bishop Carroll Friday at a site and time to be determined.

Coudersport Top Players: Darren Keglovits (16.4 ppg), Jared Green (13.9 ppg), Owen Chambers (12.8 ppg), Aaron Wolfinger (9.2 ppg)

Kennedy Catholic Top Players: Drew Magestro (15.9 ppg), Jason Austin (15.7 ppg), Sagaba Konate (15.6 ppg), Maceo Austin (9.4 ppg), Mohamed Konate (9.0 ppg), Channing Phillips (6.4 ppg)

Game Notes: Kennedy Catholic is ranked first in the state in Class A by PennLive.Com. The Golden Eagles are more of an all-star team than a high-school basketball team with the Konate brothers hailing from the African country of Mali and Jason Austin and Magestro both transfers from Sharon – Magestro, a junior, before last season and Jason Austin, a senior, before this year … Kennedy lost in the Western Finals to District 10 rival Farrell last year … Coudersport is in the second round of the PIAA Tournament for the first time since making the quarterfinals in 2008 … Keglovits is the lone senior starter for the Falcons, whose only losses have been to Ridgway, Elk County Catholic and St. Marys.

(9-1) ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC (28-0) vs. (10-2) FARRELL (20-6)

Game Details: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, at Clarion University’s Tippin Gym.

Who the winner plays: Winner of the game between (6-1) Homer-Center and (7-2) Sewickley Academy Friday at a site and time to be determined.

ECC Top Players: Nate DaCanal (13.8 ppg), Gabe Kraus (11.6 ppg), Kyle Huff (10.8 ppg), Benji Hoffman (6.7 ppg)

Farrell Top Players: Malik Miller (19.5 ppg), Terrance Holloway 14.3 ppg, Leon Lewis (10.4 ppg), Kyi Wright (7.8 ppg)

Game Notes: ECC is looking for make it to the quarterfinals for the first time since going to the Class A semifinals in 2009 … The Crusaders are unbeaten at this point in the season for just the third time in school history and for the first time since winning the PIAA Class A title in 2006 … This is a matchup between the No. 2 team (Farrell) and the No. 3 team (ECC) in the latest PennLive.com rankings … Farrell went to the PIAA title game last year before finishing second. The Steelers upset District 10 champion and rival Kennedy Catholic in the Western Finals … This is just the second all-time meeting between the traditional powers. Farrell won the first one in last year’s second round, 79-49, behind 30 points from Miller.

GIRLS’ CLASS AA SECOND ROUND

(9-1) KARNS CITY (24-2) vs. (5-1) NORTH STAR (24-2)

Game Details: 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, at IUP’s Memorial Fieldhouse

Who the winner plays: Winner of the game between (7-1) Bishop Canevin and (7-6) Burrell Friday at a site and time to be determined.

Karsn City Top Players: Emily Hegedus (17.4 ppg), LeeAnn Gibson (17.0 ppg), Alyssa Gibson (8.7 ppg), Mackenzie Craig (7.7 ppg)

North Star Top Players: Courtney Schrock (13.2 ppg, 5.2 apg), Jackie Stanko (12.2 ppg, 9.4 rpg), Olivia Zuchelli (9.2 ppg), Kayla Rice (8.1 ppg, 6.6 rpg)

Game Notes: Karns City is looking to make it to the quarterfinals for the first time since making its run to the PIAA Class AA title in 2000. Only one other District 9 Class AA girls’ team has advanced to the quarterfinals since that Karns City squad, Cranberry in 2012 … North Star is in the second round for the first time since its last PIAA appearance in 2010. That was the second straight year the Lady Cougars made the second round … Karns City comes into the game on a 17-game win streaks, while North Star has won nine in a row.
