Truck Crashes into Guide Rail, Rolls Over, Catches Fire; Operator Escapes Injury

ROSE TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Punxsutawney-based State Police say around 11:45 a.m. on October 31, a one-vehicle accident occurred on State Route 28, west of Snyder Road, in Rose Township, Jefferson County.

According to police, 29-year-old Eduar M. Cruz, of Jersey City, NJ, was traveling on SR 28 in a 2007 Volvo tractor-trailer and was attempting to negotiate a curve to the left and encountered a deer in the roadway.

Cruz attempted to maneuver to miss the deer and lost control of the vehicle, police say.

The tractor-trailer traveled across the southbound lane of travel and impacted the guide rail on the west side of the roadway with the driver’s side front of the vehicle. The trailer subsequently swung in a counter clockwise direction approximately 180 degrees subsequently turning the vehicle facing south, according to police.

The vehicle continued approximately 60 feet north on SR 28 in the southbound lane of travel before the guide rail gave out. The vehicle then rolled approximately two times over an embankment approximately 70 feet off the west side of the roadway before coming to a final rest on its roof in a stream, police say.

The vehicle subsequently caught fire, according to police.

Cruz was using a seat belt. He was able to escape without injury.

He was charged with a traffic violation.
