Two Drivers Injured in Crash on Route 36 Involving Punxsy School Bus

YOUNG TWP., Pa. (EYT) – Police say two women were injured in a crash involving a Punxsutawney Area School bus that occurred on State Route 36 in Young Township on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Punxsutawney-based State Police, the accident happened around 4:59 p.m. on Tuesday, September 7, on State Route 36 near its intersection with Bish Road, in Young Township, Jefferson County.

Police say 46-year-old Tina L. Fleming, of Punxsutawney, was operating a 2021 Bluebird International school bus when she crossed the center line and struck a 2020 Honda CRV, operated by 38-year-old Stefanie A. Wyant, of Sprankle Mills.

The bus then struck guide rails on the eastern shoulder, traveled down an embankment, and struck a utility pole. It came to a final rest in a driveway after striking a utility pole and getting saddle-bagged in the driveway.

The passenger vehicle came to a final rest in the northbound lane following the initial impact.

Both drivers were using seat belts and a four-year-old male passenger in Wyant’s vehicle was safely secured in a front-facing child safety seat.

Both drivers suffered injuries of unknown severity and were transported to Punxsutawney Area Hospital by Jefferson County EMS. Fleming was subsequently airlifted to UPMC Altoona.

The juvenile passenger in Wyant’s vehicle was not injured.

McCalmont, Central, and Elk Run Fire Companies also assisted at the scene.

A representative of Punxsutawney Area School District confirmed the bus was a Tri County Transportation bus contracted to Punxsutawney Area, but no students were on board at the time of the crash.

The school representative also reported the driver has been released from the hospital and is recovering.
