Police say at 7:15 p.m. on August 4, 2015, 63-year-old Kathy L. Shanafelt, of Emlenton, was traveling east in the right lane of Interstate 80 near the 78.7 mile marker.

According to police, the driver’s-side rear tire on Shanafelt’s 2000 Lincoln Town Car suddenly went flat causing her to lose control of her vehicle on the wet roads.

The vehicle traveled south off of the roadway where the underside of the vehicle struck an embankment that was adjacent to the south berm.

The vehicle then rotated in a clockwise motion along the embankment and slid back out onto the roadway.

Shanafelt was able to steer the vehicle onto the north berm of the roadway, where it came to rest.

Police say both Shanafelt and her 11-year-old passenger were wearing seat belts and escaped injury.
