Mayport Man Killed After Vehicle Crashes into Tractor-Trailer, Catches Fire

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Pa. (EYT) – DuBois-based State Police say a Mayport man was killed in a two-vehicle accident that occurred around 4:52 p.m. on June 20, on Interstate 80, in Washington Township, Jefferson County.

According to police, 30-year-old Justin L. Shreckengost, of Mayport, and 29-year-old Ronald S. Harper, of Griffin, were involved in the collision.

Police say Shreckengost was traveling west on I-80 in the left lane at the 90.2 mile marker westbound in a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze.

Harper was also traveling west on I-80 in the right hand lane ahead of Shreckengost in a 2013 Freightliner Conventional tractor trailer, according to police.

Shreckengost approached some slower moving traffic in front of him in the left lane, and he passed them in the right lane. He failed to observe the Freightliner in the right lane. The driver’s side of his vehicle struck the rear of the flatbed trailer on the Freightliner, police say.

The Chevrolet Cruze traveled approximately 8 1/2 feet under the Freightliner’s trailer.

Both vehicles came to rest in the right hand lane of I-80 approximately 75 feet west of the point of impact. The Chevrolet then caught on fire.

Harper and several passerby’s attempted to put the fire out with fire extinguishers, and they pulled Shreckengost out of his vehicle, according to police.

Shreckengost was pronounced dead at the scene, police say.

Harper was using a seat belt and was not injured.

Interstate 80 westbound was closed for approximately three hours.

Falls Creek Volunteer Fire Department and PennDOT assisted at the scene.
