Vera Ruth Harris Dunk

vera-ruth-dunk-2Vera Ruth Harris Dunk, affectionately known to her family as “Aunt Ruth”, was the last surviving member of the Harris Family. Born on September 1, 1927 in Grafton, VA.

Vera was educated in the Jefferson County School System in Summerville, PA. She met and married the love of her life, Dalton Earl “The Duke” Dunk, until death did they part after fifty-five years. To this union God added two children. She attended Bronx Community College, and later The College of New Rochelle where she received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Vera worked at The Albert Einstein Hospital in New York City where she served as a registered nurse in I.C.U. until her retirement.

Upon relocating to Kinston, NC she found a church home at St. James A.M.E., where she served as a missionary and usher.?
Vera had a passion for children and was well known for her poetic gift.

During the illness of both Dalton and Vera, Pastor Ronald Fletcher has faithfully served as a true friend and later in the capacity of pastor. On the morning of December 3, 2016, Vera made the transition to her heavenly home.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and beloved husband.

She leaves to cherish her memory: a loving and devoted daughter, Carol Henry of Calera, AL; a son, Earl McArthur Dunk (Laverne), of Wappinger Falls, NY; four grandchildren, Veronica F. Dunk, Walter Ethan “WE” Dunk, De Shawn and Dominique, all of New York; adopted daughter (Who God Gave Me), Minister Karen Turner, of Calera, AL; godson, Makeedah Baker, of Greensboro, NC; two adopted grandchildren, LaToya Turner, Akira Brown, of Hoover, AL; special recognition: Mrs. Elaine Coward, Dr. Fernando Escabi (Dr. E), Thelma Dunn, Pastor Ronald Fletcher, Alice Harris (sister-in-law); a host of nieces, nephews, and good neighbors, Mr. Geisler and Carl Baker of Greensboro, NC.

A private viewing was held on Sunday December 11, 2016 at the Furlong Funeral Home, (www.furlongfuneralhome.com), Gregory K. Furlong FD, corner of Broad St. and First Ave., Summerville, PA. Graveside services and interment followed at Vandervort Cemetery, Clover Twp., Jefferson County, PA.
