Vivian E. “Betty” Fischer


Vivian E. “Betty” Fischer, 82, Punxsutawney, died Saturday, January 6, 2018, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born September 17, 1935, in Spraggs, Greene County, PA, a daughter of the late Opal H. (Lemley) and Carl W. Hoy, Sr.

On November 9, 1957, she married Robert H. Fischer, who survives. They were married in the Spraggs Methodist Church.

Betty was a Class of 1953 Graduate of the Waynesburg High School where she was Miss Merry Christmas, May Queen and the Head Majorette. Following high school, she went on to continue her education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania where she earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Education.

She was an elementary teacher at Mary A. Wilson School in Punxsutawney and retired from the district after twenty-five years.

Betty was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Punxsutawney where she sang in the church choir, and taught Sunday School and Bible Study.

She enjoyed shopping, traveling, reading, going on cruises, family trips and vacations, and spending time with her family.

She was a member of Silver Sneakers and the Retired Teachers Association.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by four sons, Eric Fischer and wife Sarah of Aliquippa, Jon and wife Rebecca of Freeport, Shawn and wife Katherine of Punxsutawney, and Ryan and wife Ashlee of Punxsutawney; eleven grandchildren, Keegan, Sydney, Jordan, Garrett, Lauren, Austin, Camden, Bella, Christian, Ariana, and Avery; a brother Carl W. Hoy, Jr. and wife Donnis of Waynesburg; and two sisters, Ruth Miller of Waynesburg and Carol Kapnicky and husband Paul of Morgantown, WV.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister Lois Phillips, and an infant brother Robert L. Hoy.

Friends will be received from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney, and also from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 10, 2018, at the First United Methodist Church of Punxsutawney.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 10, 2018, at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Paul Ritchey officiating.

Interment will be in Greene County Memorial Cemetery, Waynesburg, PA.

Memorial contributions may be made, in Memory of Mrs. Fischer, to the donor’s choice.
