Voter Turnout Better Than Expected in Brookville

BROOKVILLE, Pa. (EYT) — Voters in Brookville Borough may not have had many reasons to be motivated to cast their ballots in the general election, but they were still pouring into the Heritage House Tuesday evening.

Judge of Elections Kathy Jackson said Ward 2 had 302 as of 6:10 p.m. while across the building in Ward 1 there were 352 voters.

“In my opinion, the turnout was still poor, but it was more than we anticipated,” Jackson said.

Jackson said a major topic of conversation among voters was the ballot question that read “Shall the Pennsylvania Constitution be amended to permit the General Assembly to enact legislation authorizing local taxing authorities to exclude from taxation up to 100 percent of the assessed value of each homestead property within a local taxing jurisdiction, rather than limit the exclusion to one half of the median assessed value of all homestead property, which is the existing law?”

“A lot of people didn’t know much, if anything, about it,” Jackson said. “I believe it’s very important, but there are many questions that need answered.”

Joyce Reitz, pictured above, was one resident who voted, but didn’t share her particular motivation other than a desire to do her civic duty.

Adam Reynolds, 25, was motivated to make it to the polls after leaving the woods while hunting deer.

“I feel my generation is under-represented and it’s good to get out and be heard and be counted,” Reynolds said.

Jackson worked with four other volunteers who helped people cast their votes, including Melissa Buck, Bill Exline, Barb Mackins and Betty Painter.

Voter turnout numbers and official election results are expected to be released by next Monday.
