WEATHER ALERT: Freezing Rain Advisory Issued for Region

driving-1461864_1280JEFFERSON CO., Pa. (EYT) – A freezing rain advisory has been issued for Jefferson County and surrounding areas.

The National Weather Service of Pittsburgh issued the following Urgent Winter Weather Message at 9:41 p.m. on Sunday, January 1, 2017:

…ICY CONDITIONS POSSIBLE LATE TONIGHT INTO EARLY MONDAY MORNING…

.TEMPERATURES HAVE FALLING INTO THE UPPER 20S ACROSS MUCH OF NORTHWESTERN PENNSYLVANIA AND THE VALLEYS OF THE ALLEGHENY MOUNTAINS EARLY THIS EVENING. RAIN SHOWERS ARE EXPECTED TO SPREAD NORTHEAST ACROSS THE AREA, ESPECIALLY AFTER 2 AM.

TEMPERATURES WILL BE SLOW TO WARM ABOVE FREEZING, AND THUS A SEVERAL HOUR PERIOD EXISTS BETWEEN 3 AND 8 AM WHERE FREEZING RAIN IS EXPECTED FOR THE COUNTIES MENTIONED BELOW.

CONDITIONS WILL IMPROVE QUICKLY AFTER SUNRISE WITH TEMPERATURES WARMING QUICKLY DURING THE DAY.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN PITTSBURGH HAS ISSUED A FREEZING RAIN ADVISORY…WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 3 AM TO 8 AM EST MONDAY.

* LOCATIONS…THIS ADVISORY COVERS MUCH OF NORTHWESTERN PENNSYLVANIA, INCLUDING THE INTERSTATE 80 CORRIDOR, AND THEN SOUTHWARD THROUGH THE VALLEYS ALONG AND WITHIN THE LAUREL HIGHLANDS AND ALLEGHENY MOUNTAINS.

* HAZARD TYPES…SHOWERS OF FREEZING RAIN ARE EXPECTED ACROSS THE ADVISORY AREA DURING THE EARLY MORNING HOURS ON MONDAY.

* ICE ACCUMULATIONS…RANGING FROM A TRACE TO A TENTH OF AN INCH, ESPECIALLY ON ELEVATED SURFACES SUCH AS VEHICLES AND TREES.

* TIMING…THE GREATEST THREAT FOR FREEZING RAIN WILL EXIST BETWEEN 3 AND 8 AM, ENDING QUICKLY FROM WEST TO EAST AS TEMPERATURES WARM ABOVE FREEZING.

* IMPACTS…MINOR ICE ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED, ESPECIALLY ON ELEVATED SURFACES LIKE TREES, POWER LINES AND VEHICLES. EXPOSED BRIDGES, OVERPASSES AND SIDEWALKS MAY ALSO EXPERIENCE ICING.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A FREEZING RAIN ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF FREEZING RAIN OR FREEZING DRIZZLE WILL CAUSE TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR SLIPPERY ROADS. SLOW DOWN AND USE CAUTION WHILE DRIVING.
