Wednesday’s Baseball Wrap: Johnston, Punxsy Walk Off Brookville


PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (D9Sports) – Logan Johnston’s two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted Punxsutawney to a 4-3 win over visiting Brookville on Senior Night.

The Raiders had taken a 3-2 lead on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the eighth only to watch the Chucks rally to take the win.

A throwing error allowing Tyler Richardson to start the rally at second base, and then Isaac Stouffer put two on with an infield single with one out. Johnston then lifted a ball to center field that Cole Labenne tried to catch only to have it go under his glove for the game-winning hit.

Richardson got the win in relief of Johnston going two innings allowing one run on two hits and two walks with the two hits and one of the walks coming in the eighth inning when there was also a Chucks error. But Richardson worked out of a major bases-loaded, one-out jam in the eighth when he got Cole Labenne to line into an inning-ending double play.

Johnston went six innings allowing two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out four. He was tagged for a two-run double by Tanner Labenne in the sixth that tied the game at two.

Aaron Park took the loss in relief. He pitched to two batters allowing two hits and one run. Seth Dunkle went 2 ⅓ innings allowing one unearned run on one hit, while Tyler Park pitched five innings allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits and two walks while striking out two.

Stouffer was 2-for-4 with a run scored for Punxsutawney with Johnston going 2-for-4 with the double and three RBIs. Richardson scored a pair of runs.

Aaron Park was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored for Brookville with Tanner Labenne having the double and two RBIs.

BROCKWAY 8, CLARION 6

BROCKWAY, Pa. – Brockway used a team effort to beat visiting Clarion, 8-6.

The Rovers had seven different players get hits led by a 2-for-4 outing from Dominic Inzana while six different Brockway players scored, including a pair of runs each from Zane Puhala and Conner Ford.

Santino Inzana picked up the win going six innings allowing six runs, one earned, on seven hits and a walk while striking out four. Marcus Copelli got the save pitching a scoreless seventh.

Spencer Miller, Sterling Conner and Skylar Rhoades each had two hits for Clarion. Rhoades was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored and Miller and Conner were both 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Drew Whren scored a pair of runs for the Bobcats.

Skyler Pastor took the loss in relief of Cutter Boggess. Pastor gave up two unearned runs on a hit and two walks while striking out one in an inning of work. Boggess went four innings allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits and a walk while striking out four. Calvin German tossed an inning of relief allowing a run on a hit and two walks while striking out one.

DUBOIS 1, ST. MARYS 0

ST. MARYS, Pa. – A trio of DuBois pitches combined to shutout St. Marys, 1-0, at Berwind Park in St. Marys.

Heath Means got the win going five innings of four-hit ball. He walked three, hit a batter and struck out two. Jeremy Krise then pitched 1 ⅓ scoreless allowing a walk before Dylan McCluskey got the final two outs to earn the save. He gave up one hit.

Tim Beimel might have been better in a losing effort going 6 ⅔ innings before reaching 100 pitches allowing one run on two hits and two walks while striking out 10. Jared Groll walked a batter and struck out a batter in his ⅓ of an inning.

The game’s lone run came in the top of the first inning when Peter Foradora walked leading off the game, moved to second on a bunt by Jack Mohney and to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a two-out single to center by Eric Schneider.

For St. Marys, Jesse McKee had a pair of hits, including a double.

CURWENSVILLE, KANE SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER

KANE, Pa. – Curwensville and Kane split a doubleheader at Kane with Curwensville taking Game One 12-2 in five innings and Kane rallying to score four times in the bottom of the seventh to win Game Two, 6-5.

In the first game, Avery Francisco was 3-for-3 with a walk, three runs scored and two RBIs for the Golden Tide with Bryce Timko going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, Jake McCracken 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs, Josh Terry 2-for-3 with a run scored and Noah VonGunden 1-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI.

Zachery Duck was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI for Kane.

Timko got the win going five innings allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits and five walks while striking out 13.

Robert Rumcik took the loss going four innings allowing 10 runs, eight earned, on nine hits, six walks and two hit batters while striking out two.

In the nightcap, Christopher Park’s hit with two outs in the bottom of the seventh scored Duck as Kane scored four times in the inning to stun Curwensville, 6-5.

The game was tied at two going to the seventh, but Curwensville seemingly took control with three runs in the top of the inning thanks to a VonGunden base hit and a two-run Timko homer.

But in the bottom of the inning, Caleb Holt led off a with a walk, and an out later Jake Alcorn singled him home to make it 5-3. Ange Costanzo followed with a single to put runners on first and second, and a wild pitch moved both runners 90 feet. Austin Jordan then hit a ball that was misplayed by Curwensville allowing Alcorn to score making it 5-4, and another wild pitch score Costanzo to tie the game with Jordan moving to third.

Curwensville got a temporary reprieve when Ethan Anderson hit a grounder to short against a drawn-in infield, and Jordan was gunned down at the plate with Duck, who had walked, taking second.

Park was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI for Kane with Jordan going 1-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored with Duck finishing 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, a run scored and an RBI.

Timko was 2-for-4 with the home run, two RBIs and two runs scored for Curwensville. VonGunden was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI and two runs scored.

Jordan went the distance for the win allowing five runs, one earned, on six hits and three walks while striking out three.

VonGunden was good until he hit the 100-pitch count which breathed new life into Kane.

In six innings, VonGunden gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits and three walks while striking out five.

Jeremiah Farley took the loss allowing four runs, three earned, on three hits and two walks while striking out one in ⅔ of an inning.

REDBANK VALLEY 16, CLARION-LIMESTONE 1, 3 INNINGS

HAWTHORN, Pa. – On the strength of four extra-base hits Redbank Valley rolled past visiting Clarion-Limestone, 16-1 in three innings.

Bryan Layton had a triple for the Bulldogs with Kobe Bonanno, Blaney Brooks and Jimmy Gundlach each adding doubles.

Layton was 1-for-2 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored, Bonanno was 1-for-1 with two walks, an RBI and three runs scored, Brooks was 1-for-3 with a walk and three RBIs and Gundlach was 1-for-1 with two walks, a run scored and three RBIs.

Also for Redbank Valley, Nick Smith walked twice, drove in a run and scored twice. Grayson Harman was 1-for-2 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored, Cameron Travis drove in a run and scored twice, Logan Wadding was 1-for-1 with two walks, three runs scored and an RBI and Austin Leasure walked three times, scored once and drove in two.

Curvin Goheen accounted for C-L’s lone run on a solo home run.

Layton got the win going three innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out six.

Cole Grenci took the loss going a ⅓ of an inning allowing seven runs, six earned, on three hits and three walks while striking out one.

BELLEFONTE 9, CLEARFIELD 3

HYDE, Pa. – CJ Funk drove in six runs to lead visiting Bellefonte to a 9-3 win over Clearfield.

Funk was 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and a walk while scoring once.

Dylan Deitrich added a double, two walks, an RBI and two runs scored for the Red Raiders with Cade Fortney going 1-for-2 with three walks and three runs scored.

Eli Glass was 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, a run scored and an RBI for Clearfield with Caullin Reed are going 2-for-3 with a double and Reese Wilson going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Bobby Marsh got the win in relief allowing a run on four hits and a walk while striking out one. Adam Armstrong started and went two innings allowing two runs on five hits and a walk and struck out one.

Cade Walker took the loss allowing five runs on four hits and seven walks while striking out four.
