Area Woman Killed in Head-On, Wrong Way Crash on Route 422

WHITE TWP., Pa. (EYT) – Police say an area woman was killed in a head-on, wrong way crash involving a dump truck and a passenger vehicle on State Route 422 on Tuesday morning.

According to Indiana-based State Police, the accident happened around 9:28 a.m. on Tuesday, December 14, on State Route 422 near the State Route 954/South 6th Street exit ramp, in White Township, Indiana County.

Police say a known 52-year-old man from Northern Cambria, Pa., was operating a 2017 Peterbilt dump truck traveling west on State Route 422 when a 2000 Ford Focus entered the South 6th Street exit ramp traveling the wrong direction and merged onto State Route 422 westbound facing the truck head-on.

The driver of the truck attempted to avoid the car by swerving from the right lane into the left lane but still struck the vehicle nearly head-on. Both vehicles then came to a final rest in the center median.

The driver of the Ford, identified as an 82-year-old woman from Homer City, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger of the vehicle, identified as a 78-year-old woman from Homer City, suffered major injuries and was transported to Indiana Regional Medical Center and subsequently flown to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center via LifeFlight. Police say she is expected to survive.

The truck driver was not injured.

The names of the individuals involved in the crash have not been released.

The Ford was towed from the scene by Mohney’s Towing, and the truck was towed by Weaklands Towing.

Citizens’ Ambulance Service, Indiana Fire Association, the Indiana County Coroner’s office, and PennDOT also assisted at the scene.
