Jefferson County Chert Archaeology Presentation

March 18, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Jefferson County chert is a poorly recognized lithic material that is found within the geologic context of northwestern Pennsylvania. Local Native Americans quarried and used this stone to make projectile points and other stone tools as early as 7000 BC.

Because of its limited sourcing it creates a fingerprint of the movement of people over thousands of years within this region.

Kenneth Burkett, Executive Director of the Jefferson County History Center will present the program about this rarely recognized material. He will help identify the sourcing area of this stone and discuss a series of local quarry sites and its known utilization by prehistoric Native American populations

For more information, call (814) 849-0077 or email kburkett-jchc@windstream.net.
