County Picks Company to Clean Up Hazardous Spills

BROOKVILLE, Pa. (EYT) – The Jefferson County Commissioners approved a contract with a company to provide hazardous materials cleanup after accidents and other incidents.

The commissioners voted to okay a three-year deal with Eagle Towing and Recovery, of Milesburg.

There is no retainer fee being charged.

County Department of Emergency Services Director Tracy Zents explained they had three companies interested in the HAZMAT job.

“We’ve worked with all three, and we believe Eagle to the best company,” Zents said. “Act 165 rules say the company has to be located where the response time is no more than two hours, and Eagle fits the bill.”

Eagle can perform containment and cleanup services but would primarily be handling cleanups, for instance, if a truck hauling a substance would crash on the interstate.

The county does have two HAZMAT teams, one in Punxsutawney and one in Falls Creek, that can handle containment. There are also absorbent materials used to contain spills in Corsica and other places in the county.

Zents also explained that when spills do happen, the county provides trucking companies whose vehicles were involved information on companies they can call.

The county currently bills truck companies for any costs it has in cleaning up spills.
