BROOKVILLE, Pa. (EYT) – Three employees of a Brookville nursing home have been charged in a case of alleged abuse of two residents of the facility.

According to Brookville Borough Police Department, criminal charges have been filed against the following individuals: 20-year-old Haley B. Shirey, 20-year-old Hannah T. Shirey, and 20-year-old Rebekah L. Call, all of Strattanville.

According to a criminal complaint, on Wednesday, June 7, Officer Markle, of the Brookville Borough Police Department, responded to Laurelbrooke Landing, a facility of WRC Senior Services. The director of the facility indicated that a caregiver-in-training reported abuse toward two known Laurelbrooke Landing residents in the memory support unit.

The residents were physically and mentally abused by three staff members on June 6 between 5:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., the complaint states.

One of the residents needed to be helped up and dressed for supper. When Hannah and Haley Shirey entered his room, he was kicking and moving around while they attempted to dress him. Haley Shirey allegedly started squeezing his neck and hitting him in the face. Later that night he needed help getting ready for bed, and Haley allegedly said to several people that she would “love to punch him in the face,” the complaint continues.

Haley and Hannah went into the room to help him get ready for bed, and Hannah allegedly started choking him. The witness stated that the resident was gasping for air, the complaint indicates.

Hannah also allegedly grabbed “(the resident) by the hair, pulling it. Haley grabbed his leg and bent it toward his head causing pain to him once again,” the complaint states.

A known doctor checked the resident and observed a bruise on his forehead and a scratch on his neck, according to the complaint.

A second resident began making noises, squealing – which is usual behavior for him. Hannah Shirey allegedly then went and got a cup of ice and dumped it down the resident’s back, and he began yelling at her for her actions, the complaint states.

Rebekah Call, a LPN Supervisor, observed the actions of Haley Shirey and Hannah Shirey toward the residents. She is a mandated reporter for this type of abuse, and police indicated that she failed to report the actions of her co-workers, Haley Shirey and Hannah Shirey, according to the complaint.

WRC Senior Services released the following statement regarding the alleged incident:

WRC was made aware of potential elder abuse by two CNAs at McKinley Health Center.  The police were immediately contacted and then informed of the allegations.  The employees were also terminated. The main focus at WRC has been and will continue to be the well-being of our residents and clients.  We have a zero tolerance policy for abuse.  At this time, there is an open investigation, and WRC Senior Services is not able to comment or provide any additional details.
