The Great Outdoors: Hunters Can Win Prizes in Photo Contest

One of the entertaining things you can do when afield in the Great Outdoors region is record the adventure in photos and videos.

With such advanced technology, it’s never been easier. While many share images of the harvest, there are plenty of other items that makes for great lifetime memories.

I find myself often taking shots of things I find interesting.  It could be a critter track in the mud, a turkey feather among the fall leaves, a gang of young beagles playing before the hunt, just to name a few subjects.

Recently, the Pa. Game Commission came up with two contests where hunters can share their photos and have a chance win a prize pack.

Beyond The Harvest Contest

Hunters are encouraged to snap a photo of the landscape or wildlife surrounding their favorite hunting spot, or the meal shared after a successful hunt, or any other special moment surrounding the Pennsylvania hunting experience that goes #beyondtheharvest for a chance to win a generous prize package.

Here’s how it works:

Submit a photo showing an aspect of hunting other than the harvest and provide a short caption describing why it is meaningful to you.

E-mail the submission to pgc-contest@pa.gov, and use “BTH” in the subject line. Hunters may send more than one submission. Photos must be taken in Pennsylvania.

Photos may be from any season including previous years.

Submissions must include the hunter’s first and last name.

By submitting the photo, the hunter acknowledges that he or she has received permission from all of the people pictured in the photo to enter it into the contest.

Entries will be accepted until December 31.

Captions may be edited for length and grammar.

Once the photos have been submitted, the game commission staff members will select a group of “contending” photos in late January and post the submissions in a photo album on Facebook.  Facebook users will determine the winning photo and caption by “liking” the image.

The photo and caption with the most “likes” at the end of the contest will win a prize package that includes a “Pennsylvania Game Commission Wild Game Cookbook, Second Edition,”  a “Pennsylvania Deer Hunting, Through the Pages of Game News” book, and the winner’s choice of a framed Wildlife Working Together art print.

The winner will also have the opportunity to submit a longer article describing their #beyondtheharvest hunting experiences to the Pennsylvania Game News to be considered for publication in the magazine.

Big-Buck Trail Cam Contest

The public is invited to participate in a Pa. Game Commission photo contest to showcase some of the huge whitetail bucks caught on trail cameras in Penn’s Woods.  2017 Big-Buck Trail Cam Contest images may be submitted from through November 30. Submissions should be sent to the pgc-contest@pa.gov.

Photo submissions must be of wild Pennsylvania deer taken with trail cameras. The original image file taken by the camera should be submitted rather than a photograph of the image on your computer screen.

Only photos taken during the month they were submitted will be considered. All submissions must include the photographer’s first and last name and the county where the deer image was recorded.

Individuals submitting photos are reminded that the use of bait to attract deer to your trail cam is unlawful in Disease Management Areas and discouraged elsewhere.

Game Commission staff members will select a group of “contending” photos. Photos taken and submitted during November will be reviewed December 5.

Once assembled, these contending photos will be placed on the Game Commission’s Facebook page in a photo album. Facebook users will determine the winning photo by “liking” the image.

A trail camera will be awarded to the winner.

For both contests, all photos submitted shall become property of the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

By submitting a photo into this contest, you grant the Game Commission the right to use, reproduce, store, transmit and communicate your submission in whole or in part in any media, marketing, advertising, or promotional materials.

Game Commission employees are not eligible.

The contests are not sponsored, endorsed, or administered by Facebook.

The Pennsylvania Great Outdoors region is a hunter’s paradise, and these contests are the perfect opportunities to share the hunting experience.
