ST. MARYS, Pa. (EYT) – Ridgway-based State Police released details surrounding a January 14 fire in City of St. Marys, Elk County.
Police say the fire broke out around 10:33 a.m. at 162 Taft Road, in the city of St. Marys, Elk County.
According to PA State Police and the Crystal Fire Department, the fire originated in the basement of the home.
The fire was determined to be accidental and was caused by an old refrigerator, police say.
The Fire Marshall reports that there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding this fire.
Roy Pfoutz, a resident of the house, was asleep at the time of the fire. He was awakened by a smoke detector but was trapped on the second floor. Pfoutz was forced to jump from a second floor balcony, according to police.
He was injured during the fall and was later transported to Penn Highlands for minor injuries. He was treated and released, police say.
The Red Cross assisted the family with recovery.
According to police, the total damage is estimated at $250,000.00.
The home was a total loss, police say.
The Crystal Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Fox Township Fire Department, Johnsonburg Fire Department, and St. Marys Area Ambulance.
