A. Margaret (White) VanSteenberg

Margaret VanSteenbergA. Margaret (White) VanSteenberg, age 82, passed away in the comfort of her home on Monday, March 13, 2017, at her home near Sigel, PA.

She was born on May 27, 1934, to the late Paul S. and Amy (Wayland) White, in Brookville, PA.

Margaret attended and graduated from the Sigel High School with the class of 1952, after which she attended Beauty School in Erie, PA.

She returned to Brookville and worked at Becky Alcorn’s Beauty Salon for over 15 years.

She also spent time working as a receptionist at the Sibley’s Tax Office, H & R Block, and Ed Raybuck’s Tax Service. She kept the books for VanSteenberg Lumber Company, which was a family business, and many people fondly remember her as the Avon lady; she was an Avon representative for over 40 years.

On November 16, 1966, she married Mike VanSteenberg in Brookville PA. They were together for over 30 years before Mike preceded her in passing on February 11, 1997.

Margaret was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Brookville, and eventually transferring her membership to the New Bethlehem Chapter.

For over 60 years she has faithfully attended the Brookville Presbyterian Church and she has strived to remain active in support positions within the church. People will remember Margaret for her extremely outgoing and social personality.

She was very active within the Republican party always supporting the fundraising dinners and she held a position as a judge of elections in Sigel, PA, for many years. She also was an Eldred Twp., Republican Committee Member and an Eldred Twp., Auditor for many years.

She found her joy in doing for other people, and she acted as caregiver for many relatives and friends.

She was very generous with her time, talents, and products.

Margaret loved to travel if the destination was visiting friends and family. She enjoyed socializing while eating out; her favorite stop was the Farmer’s Inn, just east of Sigel, PA.

She loved spending time with her card clubs and when she was less mobile she loved spending hours talking on the phone.

Music was an important part of her life and she thoroughly enjoyed country western. She was very proud of the musically inclined members of her family.

She would keep her hands and mind busy working on knitting, crocheting, and word searches.

The aspect of her life that brought her the most joy was her grandson; she loved being with him, supporting him, and telling stories about him to her friends.

Margaret did a lot for her community and she will be greatly missed.

Margaret is survived by 1 daughter; Ann Marie (Keith) Ahlers; and 1 grandson; Jonah Ahlers.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by 1 sister; Ellen McGaughey; and 1 brother; David J. White.

Family and friends will be received on Thursday, March 16, 2017, from 4 – 8pm, at the McKinney – d’Argy Funeral Home, ltd, 345 Main St., Brookville, PA, 15825.

The Order of Eastern Star will be performing Funeral Honors for her prior to the viewing, beginning at 3:30pm.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 17, 2017, at the Brookville Presbyterian Church, corner of White St., and Main St., in Brookville, PA, beginning at 11:00am, and officiated by the Rev. Christopher McCloskey.

Interment will take place at the Mt. Tabor Cemetery, Eldred Twp., Jefferson Co., PA.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Brookville Presbyterian Church, or to the Hobah Lodge 276, PO Box 41, Brockport PA, 15823, or to the Sigel Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 97, Sigel PA, 15860, or to the Mount Tabor Cemetery Association.
