Adams Helps Brockway Boys Hoops Advance to D9 AA Semifinals

CLARION, Pa. (D9SPORTS) – Sophomore Carter Adams scored a game-high 19 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, to help fifth-seeded Brockway hold off fourth-seeded Karns City, 56-47, in the District 9 Class AA boys’ quarterfinals Thursday night at Clarion High School.

“I’ve been working on (my game) since before fourth grade,” Adams said. “It just comes naturally. I just love playing, especially in big games like this one.”

The Rovers (11-12) used a 10-0 run coming out of halftime to break a 22-all tie at the break.

Brockway held Karns City scoreless for nearly six minutes to start the half.

“We just tried to turn about our intensity of defense,” Adams said. “We knew that we weren’t playing to our full potential and denying on the wings and ball pressuring.”

Brockway got the lead to as many as 14, 42-28, a minute into the fourth quarter.

But Karns City (10-12), on the strength of four 3-pointers, including two by Ian McElroy, to get within four, 47-43, with 2:34 to play.

That was as close as Karns City got.

Adams got loose on a breakaway, and McElroy intentionally fouled him with 1:16 left. Adams hit both free throws, and Hunter Miller hit one of two to push the Rovers lead back to seven points.

“We were just using all the energy from the student section, and all of the energy from all the plays that happened previous to their run.”

The three free throws started a stretch where Brockway hit 7 of 10 free throws to salt the game away.

Jarrett Esposito added 11 points and seven rebounds and Quade Lundberg 10 points for Brockway

Karns City got 16 points from McElroy and nine each from Reese Barger and Holden Martin. Chandler Turner had 11 rebounds.

The game was physical from the start with both teams banging each other the entire night. That led to the Rovers going the line 28 times, Adams went 16 times by himself, with Brockway making 17 of 28 (Adams was 10 of 16).

“I haven’t seen anything (that physical) during the high school season,” Adams said. “But during the travel years, I see one just as physical as this one, more physical.”

Brockway will take on top-seeded Cranberry in the semifinals next week. Details on that game haven’t been released.
