SGM Himes began his tour in Thua Thien province, South Vietnam in June 1967. He served in 11th Aviation Group of the 227th Aviation Battalion at a Helicopter Repairer.

SGM Himes was killed in action in a helicopter crash on January 31, 1968.

He was interred at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville, Alabama.
