Auburn Doubledays Roll Past Spikes, 9-0

AUBURN, N.Y. – Tommy Edman stretched his on-base streak to 19 games, but it was not enough to keep the State College Spikes from a 9-0 defeat at the hands of the Auburn Doubledays on Friday night at Falcon Park.

Edman, the sixth-round draft choice of the Cardinals out of Stanford in 2016, singled in the eighth to become the second State College (32-15) player with an on-base streak of 19 or more games this season. Jeremy Martinez put together a 21-game string from June 18 to July 24.

Despite the loss, the Spikes still hold the best record in the New York-Penn League, and lead Williamsport by four games in the NYPL Pinckney Division race.

Auburn (20-27) took the lead in the second on Luis Vilorio’s single, and then added a pair of runs in the second on a Spikes error and Sheldon Neuse sacrifice fly.

In the third, Blake Perkins delivered a two-run single, with another error allowing him to circle the bases and make it 6-0.

Ryan Ripken, son of Hall-of-Famer Cal Ripken, Jr., then doubled in a run in the seventh before Daniel Johnson brought in a run on a fielder’s choice in the eighth, with another error scoring the last Auburn run.

State College starter Dewin Perez (2-3) took the loss after allowing six runs, three of them earned, on five hits and four walks over five innings. Perez struck out three in the effort.

Luis Reyes started for Auburn and allowed just one hit while striking out three batters over three innings. Carlos Acevedo (2-3) then took over and picked up the win with three scoreless frames in which he yielded three hits.

The Spikes now head to Centennial Field in Burlington, VT to start a three-game series with the Vermont Lake Monsters (Oakland Athletics). The set begins with a 6:05 p.m. matchup on Saturday. Right-hander Harley Holt (1-0) gets his second start for State College. Vermont will go with right-hander Dakota Chalmers (4-2) on the mound.
