Benjamin Zane Means

Member_138667Benjamin Zane “BZ” Means, 90, of Valier, died Sunday, September 21, 2014 at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born February 11, 1924 in Valier, a son of the late Lynn Luther and Mona Marie (Gabrielson) Means.

Mr. Means was a United States Air Force Veteran having served during World War II as an Aerial Gunner on a B-24 and flew over thirty missions over France and Germany. For his service to his country he earned the Aviation Badge Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Campaign Stars, European African Middle Eastern Theatre ribbon, and the Good Conduct Ribbon.

He was a life member of the VFW Post # 9044 in Big Run.

Benny enjoyed nature and being outdoors, he once built a log cabin he hoped to one day live in. He also enjoyed hunting grouse with his beagles.

He was very artistic and could draw detailed pictures of airplanes. He also loved math and especially Algebra.

He is survived by three sisters, Dixie Louana Kromer of Smithscreek, Michigan, Shirlie Marlene Fisher of Washington Grove, Maryland, and Loree J. Gehrig of Denver, Colorado, numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by three brothers, Jackson Means, Harold B. Means, and Larry Means; two sisters, Rebecca McCullough and infant Sally Don Means.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 25, 2014 at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney, officiated by Pastor Dawn Krishart.

Military honors will be accorded at the funeral home by the Jefferson County Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorial donations may be made in Mr. Mean’s memory to the VFW Post #9044, the Wounded Warrior Project or to any Veteran’s association.
