Woman Pronounced Dead After Water Rescue in Summerville

SUMMERVILLE, Pa. (EYT) – Authorities say a woman was pronounced dead at the scene of a water rescue that took place near Summerville late Thursday night.

According to the Jefferson County Department of Emergency Services, a call came in at 10:04 p.m. reporting a person in the water approximately a half-mile north of Summerville.

Summerville Volunteer Fire, Summerville Ambulance, Corsica Volunteer Fire Company, Hawthorn Area Volunteer Fire Department, New Bethlehem Fire Company, Punxsutawney Water Rescue Team, Jefferson County EMS, and Punxsutawney PSP were dispatched to the scene.

Jefferson County Coroner Brenda Shumaker was called to the scene a short time later.

According to Shumaker, a 79-year-old woman was pronounced dead at 11:53 p.m.

The cause of death has not yet been determined, and an autopsy will be performed at the Erie County Coroner’s Office.

The scene was cleared 1:12 a.m.
