Deadly Fire Under Investigation in Jefferson County

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (EYT) — A fire that took the life of one person early this morning in Jefferson County remains under investigation.

According to a representative of Jefferson County Department of Emergency Services, they received a call reporting a fire at a residence on West Liberty Street in Punxsutawney around 4:10 a.m.

Central Fire Department, Elk Run Volunteer Fire Company, Lindsey Volunteer Fire Company, McCalmont Township Volunteer Fire Company, Big Run Area Volunteer Fire Company, Sykesville Volunteer Fire Company, Reynoldsville Fire Company, and Perry Township Volunteer Fire Company were dispatched to the scene, while Brookville Volunteer Fire Company and Oliver Township Fire Company were placed on standby.

Jefferson County Coroner Brenda Shumaker reported to the scene around 5:11 a.m.

One individual was killed in the fire, but additional details have not yet been released.

Emergency personnel cleared the scene around 8:35 a.m. while the Ridgway-based State Police Fire Marshall Unit remained to investigate the cause and origin of the fire.

The investigation is ongoing.
