Brockway Park Revitalization Moving to Phase 2

BROCKWAY, Pa. (EYT) – With Kids’ Kingdom finished and children playing at the park, the revitalization of Taylor Memorial Park is ready to move into Phase 2.

Peter Varischetti visited the Brockway Borough Council to give an update on the project.

“Timing for the next phase isn’t super set,” he said, “but you won’t see anything during the summer. We won’t interfere with all the events going on.”

The park is being revitalized in multiple phases, and a finish date is not set in stone. Phase 1 involved adding new playground equipment to Kids’ Kingdom and cleaning up the existing equipment. New, softer surfaces were installed around the playground equipment. In addition, a zipline was added, though that comes with a common-sense reminder for residents to avoid walking in front of someone on the zipline.

Phase 2 will require working with stormwater management and other considerations. Because of this, Varischetti is meeting with different engineers to find a proposal that works for the park.

The later phases bring in a looping trail that circumnavigates the park and uses the levy system along the Little Toby Creek. The creek will even have overlooks so residents can enjoy the waterfront. In addition, the project is proposing creating an area called Brockway Landing that makes it easier to get down to the fishing area by the Main Street Bridge. There will also be a new athletic complex that brings in a full-sized dek hockey area and three new basketball courts that are also lined for volleyball. The existing courts will become parking.

Parking and pedestrian access is a major focus in later phases. 7th Avenue will be reimagined with new lighting, parking, and sidewalks. The goal is to make 7th less like it cuts through the park and more like a piece of the park.

The amphitheater will get a little work as well, with the area around the American Legion Stage becoming the Community Green, complete with new seating and throughways.

“Anyone going by the park will think that there’s nothing going on right now,” Varischetti said. “But there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes.”
