Brookville Area School District Alerts Residents About Exemption from Occupational Tax

BROOKVILLE, Pa. (EYT) — The Brookville Area School District is reaching out to taxpayers regarding the occupational assessment tax bills that were recently mailed.

The School District wants to alert many that received the bills that they are exempt from paying them, but they also must fill out a form and send it to the school.

Here is the letter that was mailed:

BROOKVILLE AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT

Occupational Assessment Tax

You may have recently received a bill for an occupational tax from Berkheimer for the Brookville Area School District.

If, as of July 1, 2017, you are retired, unemployed, a homemaker, active US military, clergy, full-time student or have moved out of Brookville Area School District, you are EXEMPT from the tax.

If you fall into one of those categories, you need to fill out an exemption form and send it to the school by October 31, 2017.

The exemption form is available on the District’s website (www.basd.us) under “Latest News”, at the District’s Administrative Office, or by calling 814-849-1103.

The office is located at 104 Jenks Street, Brookville, PA, and office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

All tax bills were prepared with the professional/managerial assessment.

But, the tax is levied at three levels ($50 for laborers, $85 for skilled labor, and

$105 for professional/managerial), with examples of occupations for each category listed on the reverse side of the form.

DO NOT just pay the $105 you were billed.

Only pay the $105 if you are in a professional/managerial occupation.

If you need to adjust your assessment to either laborer or skilled labor, fill out the form listing your adjusted occupation and mail the following three items to HAB-MISC, PO Box 25144, Lehigh Valley, PA  18002:

1) the signed form certifying your assessment adjustment,

2) the stub from your original bill noting your revised amount, and

3) your payment of the adjusted amount due to Berkheimer.

With state and federal budgets shrinking, public schools are expected to do more with less.

We at Brookville Area School District have reduced the number of administrators, combined job descriptions, and are now considering consolidating buildings, all in an effort to keep our costs as low as possible, yet maintain all of the programs that our community values.

If you have any questions regarding this issue, please do not hesitate to call the Brookville Area School District at 814-849-1103.
