CLARION, Pa. – Clarion University freshman wrestler Brock Zacherl (Brookville) was named the EWL (Eastern Wrestling League) “Freshman of the Week” after finishing a strong second at the Clarion Open on Sunday at 141-pounds.
Wrestling unattached, Zacherl posted an impressive 4-1 record in the event held at the Clarion University Rec Center.
Zacherl opened with a technical fall (17-2) over Jayce Carr of Cleveland State, then won by tech. fall (16-1) over Alexander Mirante. In his third match he posted a 10-2 major decision over Brandon Lapi (Buffalo), then in the semi’s won by injury default over Tyson Dippery of Rutgers, setting Zacherl up with a finals matchup against #2 rated and two-time Edinboro All-American Mitchell Port.
Zacherl led 4-2 at the end of the first period with two first period takedowns. Port escaped in the second and got a takedown to lead 5-4 after two periods. In the third Zacherl took neutral, took Port down, and after Port escaped to tie the match 6-6, the Edinboro senior posted a takedown and had riding time to win 9-6.
“Brock had a very strong day of wrestling and really had a barn-burner of a match with Port in the finals,” said Clarion coach Keith Ferraro. “Congratulations to Brock on getting this award – he really earned it and is going to be a very exciting wrestler to watch here at Clarion.”
Zacherl, a true freshman, was the PIAA Class AA State champion last year from Brookville High School. He is a Business major at Clarion and is the son of Emily and Louis Zacherl.
