Sykesville Man Accused of Theft, Jailed on $10k Bail

SYKESVILLE, Pa. – A Sykesville man has been charged with theft from a property on Curvex Street, in Sykesville Borough. According to court documents, Sykesville Borough Police Department filed criminal charges against 31-year-old Joseph Brian Himes, of Sykesville. According to a criminal complaint, around 12:00 p.m. on April 22, Officer Detwiler, of Sykesville Police Department, received a complaint from a known woman stating that several items had been removed from her rental property located at 62 Curvex Street, in Sykesville, without permission. According to the statement given by the victim, Joseph Brian Himes had been renting the property for several months. The victim contacted Himes indicating that she wished to do an inspection of the property. When she attempted to inspect the property, it was noted that she was unable to gain access due to a dead bolt, the complaint states. The complaint indicates that a notice to pay or quit the lease was posted on the property on April 18 by the victim. On April 21, the victim gained access to the residence and noticed that the following items were missing from the premises:
  • One 42" RCA LCD TV ($220)
  • One 42" HiSense LED TV ($400)
  • Side by side refrigerator ($700)
  • Whirlpool Electric Dryer ($280)
  • Roper Washing Machine($360)
  • A red child's wagon ($50)
  • Stove hood ($130)
  • Microwave ($40)
The total value of all stolen property is an estimated $2180. The victim stated that she had previously asked Himes "if he minded that she stored the items at the house, and allowed him to use the appliances. At no point was permission given to Himes to remove the items from the premises," according to the complaint. Around 11:46 p.m. on April 22, while serving an arrest warrant on Himes at 45 Sykes Street, in Sykesville, Officer Detwiler noticed several items that were missing from the residence owned by the victim, the complaint states. The known homeowner informed Officer Detwiler that the items were brought into the home by Himes and that she was under the impression that they were his. The homeowner voluntarily consented to a search of the house, the victim was permitted into the residence to confirm which properties had been taken from her, and the property was recovered promptly. The stove hood was thrown out, according to Himes, and the microwave could not be located, the complaint continues. Based on his investigation, Officer Detwiler filed a criminal complaint against Himes in Magisterial District Judge David B. Inzana's office. He was arraigned at 1:20 p.m. on May 26 in front of Judge Inzana on a third-degree felony charge of Theft By Unlawful Taking-Movable Property. Unable to post $10,000.00 monetary bail, Himes was lodged in the Jefferson County Jail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on June 14 with Judge Inzana presiding.
