Bases-Clearing Triple Lifts Curve Past Richmond Sunday

RICHMOND, Va. – For the second straight game, a bases-clearing triple lifted the Altoona Curve over the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Sunday afternoon at The Diamond. With the Curve down to their final out, Erich Weiss snuck a three-bagger inside the first-base line to plate three runs and give Altoona a 5-3 win. Altoona (4-6) split the four-game series at Richmond (4-7). After a bases-loaded walk to Justin Maffei brought the Curve within a run, Weiss drove the bases-clearing, three-run triple against Jake Smith (Loss, 1-1) to put the Curve ahead, 5-3. Montana DuRapau (Save, 3) allowed the tying run to reach base for Richmond in the bottom of the ninth, but struck out Austin Slater to end the game. Richmond broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out, two-run single by Slater against Altoona reliever Brett McKinney (Win, 1-1). Eric Wood got the Curve on the board and tied the game in the top of the seventh with a solo home run, his first of the season. Altoona starter David Whitehead worked around four walks and held Richmond to just one hit across his five scoreless innings. He finished the day with four strikeouts. Richmond plated a run in the seventh against Altoona reliever Dovydas Neverauskas on a fielder’s choice ground out by Tyler Horan. Stetson Allie had two hits, including a double. Reese McGuire went 2-for-3 for the Curve. The Curve went 1-for-7 on Sunday with runners in scoring position and 4-for-29 (.138) during the four-game series. The Curve begin a three-game series against the Harrisburg Senators on Monday night. Right-hander Jason Creasy (1-0, 4.92) will start for the Curve, countered by Senators right-hander Austen Williams (0-1, 3.00). First pitch from FNB Field in Harrisburg is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
