Clarion-Limestone Academic Sports League Wins First in State, Moves on to National Competition

CLARION, Pa. (EYT) – The Clarion-Limestone Academic Sports League team won first place in the small school division of the PA Academic Decathlon on March 10, earning the right to travel to Texas to compete at Nationals on April 21.

The academic decathlon has three divisions, allowing students at varying skill levels to compete. The honors division is for “A” average students, the scholastic division is “B” average, and varsity is “C” average. At states, each school fields teams of three in each of the three divisions.

When comparing size, Clarion-Limestone is the second smallest school in Pennsylvania to compete in the academic decathlon.

The only other local school that competed at the state finals was North Clarion.

At the PA state finals, held at Clarion University on March 10, there were fourteen total schools; seven were large schools and seven were small schools. Clarion-Limestone placed first among small schools and fifth overall among all divisions – large and small – with a score 38,979.

The top five schools overall were:

1st – Souderton (large school) scored 42,791 points
2nd – Collegiate Academy (large school) scored 42,786 points
3rd – Seneca Valley (large school) scored 41,479 points
4th – McDowell (large school) scored 39,133 points
5th – Clarion-Limestone (small school) scored 38,979 points

Clarion-Limestone collectively won 29 medals at the state competition.

The Clarion-Limestone Academical Decathlon Team will be traveling to Frisco, Texas, to compete on April 21 at the national level.

C-L’s team trains year round for the competitions. This year they competed twice in the fall and then moved on to Regionals in February and States in March.

The team first qualified to compete at the state finals five years ago and has improved its performance every year since.

C-L will compete as a Division 4 school at the National competition. They are currently seeded sixth of all Division 4 schools in the nation.
